Wes calmed his heart and steadied his breathing. He was an experienced agent and though Harlow was an experienced police officer, his commitment to protect her ramped up all the fear. Adrenaline surged and took over so he could act quickly and think clearly.
Holding his gun at the ready, Wes turned off the inside lights but left the security lights on outside, then he stood back to the wall near the window and slowly peered out, searching for the source of the tapping.
âWhat do you think made that sound?â Harlow whispered the question from across the room.
âI wish I could say that it was simply a branch hitting the glass. Thereâs a good breeze out there and I see branches moving. But no trees are close enough to hit the window or the roof.â
âAre you sure?â
âNot completely.â But the tapping had sounded...intentional. He ignored the dread growing in his gut. âIâm not going to check the perimeter until Kelly gets here. Someone could want to draw me out to get to you.â
âThen let them come,â she whispered. âI have a gun and I know how to use it.â
âOf that, I have no doubt.â She was trained FBI and a police officer, after all.
âThen letâs do it. Wes, this could be our chance to get this guy. If heâs out there, let him in. Between the two of us, we can take him down.â
Had she so quickly forgotten the close call from before? Granted, she hadnât been expecting to be abducted and now she was ready and waiting, but he wouldnât take the risk.
Fortunately, headlights shone between the trees as a vehicle approached the cabin. âHelp is on the way, so we donât need to wait.â
âAlready?â
âKelly said he would make sure someone was close by in case we needed help, considering the dire circumstances.â
âYou mean circumstances surrounding a serial killer on the loose.â
âExactly. Yes, youâve got skills, Harlow, but considering the threat to you, I need you to get behind the kitchen counter. Iâm going to open the door. When I close it, lock it behind me, then get back into a secure position.â
She said nothing and Wes took her silence as agreement. He carefully opened the door just as the truck lights were cut, but he could see a ranger stepping from his vehicle, his weapon out and at the ready, his posture menacing. Another set of headlights appeared and tires crunched along the drive. The additional vehicle parked next to the first rangerâs truck. Another two rangers hopped out.
Kelly approached Wes. âSomeone tapped on the window? Heâs here then?â
âHe could be. Or he could have fled already. But I need a perimeter check. Iâll take one of you with me for that. The other two can stay here and guard Harlow.â With your life, please.
Kelly gestured to the female ranger. âThis is Ranger Gayle Johnson and Ranger Toby Cooper.â
The woman stepped forward and Wes led her to the cabin and opened the door. âHarlow, Gayle is coming inside to wait with you and protect you.
